I ended up staying for the entire show at Rotary Fest and I must say the local band Cleveland Steamer were great. The guitarist is smoking and had a beautiful amp sound. All the bands were good. My only beef was the material of Mustang Heart. Solid band but the song choice was old and tired. Sorry, just being honest. The musicianship and vocals were top notch and I just think it was wasted on bad song choice. Spyders Web vocally were excellent. Shirley always does a dyno show. I'm not crazy about the 2 piece band plus drum machine thing but it works for them. My only other complaint was the cold cold weather... Ok what dummies told me that this was suppose to be a "RECORD BREAKING" summer for heat and I said NOOOOOT. I should have put money on it. I'd be rich 'cause it felt like winter last night.

News Flash
I learned that Mike Case is in ill health but recovering from surgery related to cancer. He's doing well after an operation and is back to work but if you see him or wander into his store, give him a hug ;-)

I checked out Saturdays events at Rotary Fest, mainly the 2nd Stage bands but some main stage ones as well. My favourite bands were "the Revue", and "The Spades" from Saturday. The Revue has something about them that I think would make it big if they got out of the Sault. I definitely enjoy their song writing. Big Wheel and the Spokes were good yet I thought their set was short but I'm not sure. The Spades were great and remind me of the old band "The Plimsouls" Last, the band "IT". I've seen them before but this line up is all new with one original member. Interesting band that borrows heavily from Pink Floyd and seems to be sneaking in a bit of Porcupine Tree for good measure. Video screens were interesting. My only beef was the lead guitarist's sound. It's apparent to me that a Marshal stack is in the wrong hands ;-) Good player, bad sound. Listen to a bit of Gov't Mule or Big Sugar to get it right ;-) ah yes.. and last but not least, I ran into some old bandmates from the old Crank Shop band.

I went to check out the new local band "The Low Grove" last night at the old Cellar Tap. Interesting band and material. The songs ranged from a smooth folk style to the Jackson 5, Hendrix to Norah Jones. 6 piece band.. sax, 2 guitars, bass, drums with 2 singers (male, female). They're a young band but had a fairly good crowd. I stayed for 2 sets. Definitely easy to listen to.. My favourite was the bassist (Josh). He's definitely one of the solid "up and coming" players on the local scene. They have a gig out at Trout Lake.. Check the "Upcoming Shows" for details.

Shows on the go at this hour (midnight August 25) are Hempfest which is a 4 day event down the old highway 638 behind Echo Bay and out in Trout Lake, the end of summer bash. Both shows feature numerous acts. Crank Sound Distribution is doing the show at Hempfest. Any reviews of either show are welcome on the forum ;-)

It's been a while since I've posted. I still see some people viewing the site which is always good.
Recent news:.. Kim Mitchell just released a new album and it's his best work in years. I got it last week and the more I play it the more I love it. His vocals are the great on this effort. My only beef is the drumming which is tight but way to basic for my tastes.
Also.. the band Grady cancelled it's Canadian tour because their drummer quit do to health reasons. Personally I'd love to drum for them but I like my hearing :-)
On the local front, Korah Collegiate is celebrating a 40th anniversary and I've been asked to play with the band The Werx for this gig. Apparently there are a few other bands too. I'll post the names when I get them.
Also, Jeremy from my old band Route 69, has a new project which has been playing a few times now and they also have original material. I have yet to see them but will soon.
And lastly, summer 2007 is over and the music scene locally has taken a big hit. Most bars are just booking single nights. It's a sad turn of events that I think will be the end of local bands who in some cases, put a lot of money and time into band gear and production. Docks is still holding strong for 2 nighters and I do hope some will return to the 2 night format. The latest bar to open is Club Xssess which is the old Glow bar. Hopefully this will fly. They are booking bands but on single nights.. mainly saturday. If you could book Foggies for a friday and Club xssess for a saturday, then you might have something. ;-)
That's it for now..

Interesting new bar opened on Queen Street. I don't know much about it but it's called "Eargasm". Please correct me if I'm wrong. Anyways, they have a Myspace site here: www.myspace.com/eargasmatronSeems to be a lot of bands playing the venue with a wide range of talent. Rumour has it, you can also have your gig recorded. I'll post more details as I get them ;-) Club X ssess seems to be plugging away still with live entertainment on saturdays. All is good when you support the local music scene. My band Flat Stanley is interested in doing the gig when we find out more details. Apparently sound system and tech are supplied ;-)

Well, it's a sad thing when you're the headliner for a major event and you don't get any write ups or photos put up on Sootoday or Soonews yet the opening band does. Gotta LOVE the good ole Soo. It wasn't bad enough the opening act played 25 minutes over their time slot and the drummer took his sweet time getting his kit off the stage giving us a 40 minute delayed start to which at most should have been 10 minutes. The sound tech and a host of others were not impressed but hey, I expected nothing less from "Tripod the Dog". SO with all my whining done... I'll post pictures of us taken by a loyal fan and a live video. I'm use to the lack of any support from the local media with any project I've been involved in, but the others in the band at least deserve a little recognition so here it is. ;-) Here's a video from the show ! "The Werx Live Video from the Steelback Center"Thanks to Diane for the pics and vid.

Hmmm How do I start this. The Music scene in the Soo seems to be in a major slump. Bars that use to draw huge amounts of people have recorded as many as 10 people a night now for bands that use to be top draw. Over saturation possibly? Not sure. There's no shortage of bands that's for sure. New bands I've heard of but haven't seen yet are Lois Lane, Wishbone to name a few. I'm hoping to see Wishbone tomorrow night. Lop Lops and the Bottoms Up seem to be focusing on the original acts which is great but other than that, Docks seems to be the main watering hole. There's a new bar opening just up the street from me which seems to have a similar theme to Smokeys. Not sure if there's a connection and I've not heard if the bar will cater to live entertainment. I do hope it will. If I get a chance to see Wishbone on saturday, I'll post my comments. :-)

Ummmmm... Is there news? Oh yeah.. The Glow bar.. no wait... The Club Xcess bar..... Notta.. It's callled something else now.. The OTHER BAR... I think.. Anyways.. they're trying it yet one more time. I wish these people would throw money my way rather than gamble it on that place. When will they learn.. It was born to be a bowling alley and no bar has ever worked in that building. I'm not even sure if the bowling alley is still up stairs.. It was a 5 pin bowling lane.. Lots of fun when I was a kid.

Ok.. some mysterious person sent me Youtube links to a band called Billy Bastards... I have no clue who this band is but they suck.. Sorry. I watched the vids and I'm sorry, that's my opinion..
Also.. a band called "Lion Ride".. again.. I'm sorry.. they're bad. Big guitar sound and basic chords.. "IT's BEEN DONE"!!! Apparently they're recording with Helix's producer or something. Anyone can do that if you have money.. ;-) I highly doubt much will happen with them but hey, what do I know. I've been wrong before..I think.. ummm .. yeah once. I said the Beatles would reunite.. ;-)
Sorry to the mysterious emailer about those bands but, that's how it goes.. ;-)
