k.. I'm ticked. Is this a louse or what? What do you think of a musician bailing 2 hours before a jam for a band that was to have their very first practice I am speechless. ALAS>>>> I LOVE Sault musicians...

I'm sure most people remember the song "The Monster Mash" from their Halloween days. Sadlly the writer and singer of that song, Bobby "Boris" Picket has passed away. As a kid I wore out my copy of this song many times and then went out and bought another copy. I was a huge fan of the "Monsters of Filmland" books and at the time saturday movie horror hosts were the in thing. Thus my "The Ghoul" advertisement on this forum What is very interesting about the "Monster Mash" song is that is charted on the Billboard 100, 3 times in 2 decades. Yes. the original.. not a remake.. It hit number 1 in 1962, #96 in 1970 and then #10 in 1973. Bobby toured up until his death and you can find his website here.. www.themonstermash.com

Someone asked me a while back if I knew who wrote the famous song "Without You", a song that seems to be redone every few years and makes tons of cash. The answer is: Of course I know.. it's by one of my top ten favourite bands.. ;D The list is long on singers who have sang this song including Whitney Houston but the most famous version was done by Harry Nilsson.. Now the twist to this song. The writers of this song are probably the only ones to not have a hit with this song and what's even worse, hardly make a cent from it. Do you know who it is? Probably not.. Well, the composers were Pete Ham and Tom Evans of the band "Badfinger" who originally wrote the song "Without You". Badfinger was one of the first bands to be signed to the "Apple" record label after the Beatles started it. They actually sounded a lot like the Beatles in harmonies and guitar sounds. The track "Without You" quietly sat on one of their early albums and even though they had great hits with "Come and Get it" , Baby Blue, and Day After Day, Without You didn't really hit an audience until Nilsson sang the song. The sad part is that Badfinger did some horrible contract signings and big money escaped the hands of this very talented band.

We are playing this Saturday June 2 aboard the Chief Shingwauk Tour boat. This is a benefit show for MS and it's $20.00. It's a booze cruise. Pizza and snacks are free, booze is extra. Be at the Dock 9pm sharp or the boat leaves without you :-)

Yuuuuuuuuuuuup.. the Freq's Music Planet is dead.. Well, it's always been dead but moss is starting to grow on it now..haha. Truthfully though, so is the Sault Music scene.. It's about as lame. How do we change the music scene? Don't know, don't care. I use to care but I got slammed for my efforts back in my Soonet.ca days, so y'er on your own ;-) I'm not sure what bands are even playing around town anymore because so many bars are only doing single nights OR 5 bands are playing on the same stage on that single night. What really is the point of that? The bars that do book bands are only booking the same 4 bands per month and some of those... SUCK.. yeah.. Honesty hurts I know. So far, this has been one lame summer of music.. I pray that the 2nd stage at Rotary Fest adds a little snap to the music scene in July. If not, I'm gonna start yawning even more. :-)
Truthfully, the only interest I've seen in a band is the Revue. I've seen them and the regular bands around town and boy, does there need to be a change. No offense to these other bands but it's time to change your material, do originals or something. We're at the "milking an audience" stage and it's getting really drab. Gsis Murphy played.. they had like 6 new songs?? In a year that's the best you can do? Sheesh. awe well, it's amazing what money will do to ya. |o|
oh.. Blues/jazz festival is on for this year. Tickets are a gazillion dollars for this thing. We all know what's going to happen there. Some people never learn. I've gone to some really cool Blues festivals in Ontario and paid................"zip"! AND saw some great "well known" acts. I have yet to pay 50 bucks to see unknowns. That's the problem with this festival. ;-) Oh well, if it works this year.. GREAT.. All the best. ;-) If not.. "I told ya so" 3 years in a row. :-) Anyone know if the bands from the first year of this festival got paid yet?? :-) I know 3 groups that still haven't received a cent. 4 years an counting. :-)
Yeah I'm bitter today. I didn't sleep well. I broke a nail and I'm out of Frosted Mini Wheats.. |o|

I never thought I'd be saying this, but I'm playing Rotary Fest on July 20 at 8 pm. I was asked by Trish of the band "The Werx" to do a fill in on drums for them. Rotary Fest has always been a thorn in my side but on the positive side, I get to play with a really solid band that to my surprise are doing 2 very cool original tunes. I've had a few jams with the band and it's been fun. Totally different than my other bands. I do think the band is retiring after this gig so if you've not seen them before, now is your chance.

A new recording studio is currently in the works. IT is called BassWerx and will be a top notch outfit when it's up and running.. The building is in it's remodelling stage and it will contain the latest in Pro Tools technology. You can see some of the construction work by visiting their website. www.basswerx.ca .
