Last year, the band "War" played at Runway Park in the Soo with numerous other bands. I've always been a fan of the band but knew that the version of the band playing had no original members. Find that odd? It's not as uncommon as you might think. In the case of WAR, the original members lost the rights to use the name. The only somewhat original member in War's current lineup is Lonnie Jordan (keyboards). The largest group of the remaining members formed their own group, called the Lowrider Band. It consists of the other four surviving original core group members of War: Howard E. Scott, B.B. Dickerson, Lee Oskar, and Harold Brown (Charles Miller was murdered in 1980 and Papa Dee Allen died of a heart attack in 1988). These members lost the right in court to use and tour under the name War. That name is a registered trademark owned by Jerry Goldstein Far Out Productions, ironically, a person who co-wrote with the band and was a producer.
Other bands are going through this similar problem. Most are bands from the 50's and 60's. It's an interesting read if you find some of these bands going through this problem. Imagine being an original member of a million selling band yet you're not entitled to use the name you created.
Now, WAR is nominated for the rock and roll hall of fame.. What members appear on the show? The fakes, or the originals who are not allowed to use their original band name. Interesting problem isn't it?

I LOVE THAT SONG!!!!!!! My favorite guitar part just before Steve Wilson goes to the keyboards is buried in the mix though. You can hear it faintly but on the album it's right in your face. Gavin is so amazing on drums.

Rotary Fest is right around the corner. One week to be exact. A good line up for Rotary 2nd stage is happening. It's now a 2 nighter. We "Wishbone" are starting things off on Friday at 5pm. The biggest news is the Road Hammers closing Saturday on the main stage. I'll be there :-) It's free so how can you lose.
Other news. The Michael Jackson stuff will not go away. Apparently they lost the body or don't know where it is. HA! This thing gets stranger each day. Also, Paul McCartney has put to rest any rumours of "MJ's will" leaving the Beatles song rights to him. We all knew that anyways.
Mike Case is battling another bout with cancer. Mike is an extremely well known guitarist and music celeb in the Soo so send him a prayer. He's so full of energy and will beat this if we all give him some support.
Cheesie Smurphy still suck ass. Dr. Phil from the Soo is still a whacko and last but not least, The Freq is alive and well and enjoying life and writing songs just to annoy everyone.. haha

I can think of some more recent bands that have lost all their original members...Napalm Death come to mind, legendary death/grindcore band, but their first lineups weren't stable, their first album has two different lineups on the different sides. Opeth (my absolute favourite prog metal band) have none either, all but one revolted when Mikael Akerfeldt joined, and the last remaining bolted a few years later. Oh, if I don't get back here by Saturday, Happy Halloween!

I just bought a DVD that is a tribute to producer Trevor Horn and a majority of the bands he produced played on this DVD concert. 2 major bands YES and Frankie Goes to Hollywood had different lead singers. They were killer on this DVD but YES without Anderson was really strange.
