I title this topic "gossip" because as far as I know, that's all it is. :-)
Foggies has changed ownership and is now called "Feedback". I don't know the owners but the same old "disturbing the peace" problem that plagued Foggies in recent years seems to have carried over to the new owners. Volume has always been a problem at this bar over the years, not because of every band, but some bands. The rumour has been that it's a neighbour just being a dickhead but in my opinion, it goes both ways here. Bands are just to damn loud these days in this city and like I mentioned before, they skimp on sound systems so you either have loud sound or you have loud shit sound. It also has to do with the style of music played in these bars. No offense to any genre of music, but lets face it, not everyone is going to swallow punk or death metal music in their neighbourhood. I've heard this jibberish from so many people over this problem at this bar this past week and everyone is missing the point as usual. Look at what the other bars are booking around the area. You can't tell me bands at Lop Lops are going to annoy neighbours considering a lot of them are acoustic based or easier on the ears. Then you have the Rockstar Bar. Their mix of music is again more rock. As much as some don't want to hear it, the music played is a factor, the quality of sound and band are factors, the type of audience said bands attract are a factor and yes, the type of neighbour is a factor. It has nothing to do with "zoning". The zoning for these bars was established years ago but that doesn't mean you can break the sound barrier. It also doesn't mean neighbours have to listen to bands swear their heads off on a P.A. system at mach 12 volume. It also doesn't mean neighbours have to deal with drunks swearing, throwing up or fighting on the streets in front of the bar. Like come on, use common sense. Feedback has an uphill battle to figure out. You have to either look at just booking bands on the weekends and possibly solo acts for week days. Why you ask? It's simple. You want to play fair with your neighbours. They don't want to listen to a full week of loud music, so split the week up. Also, control the volume and quality of sound bands have. This is nothing new. For years, bars always had the say over volume so why blame the neighbour?? My biggest complaint is bands being absolutely cheap on sound systems. Quality just doesn't seem to matter anymore. I have watched tons of local videos of band these past years from local venues and my observation is this. The bands music drowns out the singers in almost all cases. Who wants to listen to thumping music with no vocals every night of the week? Then when you can actually hear the singer, he's either screaming, or swearing his head off. Do neighbours around the bar want to hear this? Of course not. Use your heads people. Tone, down the volume, clean up your act and meet in the middle. Even go as far as to ask neighbours in the area what would be a happy middle ground. It's been done before and it's always worked. Everyone has rights but you can't have it all your own way. The neighbour has more rights simply because of "laws". I know you don't want to hear that either but neighbours do have rights over noise. You can b*tch about the noise laws all you want in the area of the bar Feedback is set in, but the bottom line is that before any music ever graced that bulding, it was in fact a hardware store. ;-) Loud noise and music are not "normal" everyday occurences so you either play the game or you pay the fine. Working things out with your neighbour can really get everyone on the same playing field but being a dickhead and not even attempting to work with neighbours is just going to sink your ship. Have a talk with all neighbours in the area and see if you can come up with something that works. It will only cost you a bit of time and it won't cost you a fine. ;-)
The other bar in question is Docks. The gossip I've heard is that it's under new ownership and it's future is questionable. Rumour has it that Docks will be flattened and an apartment building will be built there. No, I'm not talking about the new spiral apartment building that will be built on the site of the old brewery. This is on the Docks property. If it's true, we'll lose a great place to play which is really sad. I hope this is all false, but I've heard it from quite a few lately and it's beginning to look as though Docks days are numbered.
Lastly, the old "Peachies Pizza" building is up for sale. Where is that you ask??? It is the old Foggies bar on Bay Street which was also home to other bars in the past like Cheers, Rednecks, and numerous other names.
For years, it was always rented but now it is in fact for sale. I have no idea of price but I do hope someone buys it and turns it into a bar. I would love to see it be an old 60's music bar for the older crowd.
That's it for now. :-)
