It's pretty sad that my band Wishbone (or any band I play in for that matter :-) never gets notice in events we play in. Is it because we're the bad boys of rock? |O| Maybe we smell? I know we shower before our gigs so that can't be it. Maybe we just plain suck. I don't really know but local media avoids us like the plague. After 3 years of hard work and 3 albums worth of material and 2 released albums we truly get "squat" for support from local news except for one brave gal who took the time to interview us back in 2009. Maybe they don't understand our music, or understand how much effort we put into what we do. Maybe they think this is a joke to us or maybe they think we're jokes. Maybe they just down and out think our music sucks monkey balls. Again, I don't understand the blow offs but it's quite obvious. The work we put into our music is something we love to do but it's what we need to do to gain an audience of fans. Yes, we're not afraid to fight for recognition but having some support from our local media would help. Personally, I gave up on local media years ago back in the 90's when I had a band called Rainhorses. You pretty much had to pay to get your band in the paper or have a ritual killing on stage to spark media interest. |O| Yup, it's quite simple. If they don't like your music, or you personally, you're a lost cause with media. If you don't play "friendly" music you're on your own too. If you have an opinion like me, you can pretty much forget any support. OOPs! haha!!!!!!!! The old saying lives loud and proud in the Sault and that is "Behold the Power of the Press". Do they play favourites? of course. Do they ignore? Most certainly. This is what we see and this goes for other musicians too. Is it a hopeless venture to get media interest? YOU BET~! Tons of local bands come and go without a whisper from local media and yet some get so much media coverage it almost makes you barf. It just appears there is no balance or I guess a better word would be fairness.
So, Wishbone played the Hot Rides Cornfest concert at Laird Raceways this past weekend and yes, the audience was sparse for us and a number of bands that followed us. Maybe because we were the only rock band in the show we got snubbed. Not sure. I will say this, we wanted to play this show and we would have done it for free to help spread our music around. Instead, we played for $100 total which basically covered our fuel for our vehicles. The organizers wanted us in the show and that alone made our day. I made them an offer they couldn't refuse. ;-) We sold a bunch of our CD's and even got to sign some autographs. The best part of our entire show was seeing country and western fans with cowboy hats come over and buy our stuff and then say, we enjoyed your music and we took some photos and video of you show and we'd like to send them to you. How is that for support? Bottom line is, they weren't local media. ;-) Does this media thing piss me off? No, but it sure makes me laugh. I enjoy writing about it because I just think it's pathetic.
So Wishbone played for practically no money and no recognition with thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours into our music and our graphics and once again got snubbed by local media. Maybe it's just me they don't like. |O|.. Say it isn't so local media haha. If it is... I'll never stop yapping about this so fasten your safety belts. ;-) Maybe the local media just forgot how to rock. ;-) That's got to be it.
To the people who enjoyed our music this weekend, thank you!!! For the Westbury sound techs and roadies who helped us, dug our tunes and bought our CD's, we thank you. To the organizers and race track owners who wanted us in the show, we thank you and for family and friends who support us and enjoy what we create in music, thank you.
As for local media, another disappointment for Sault bands working their asses off doing original music that for whatever reason doesn't meet our medias tone deaf ears of taste. (insert a big wet fart here!)
