Recently, some of the Michigan Soo's radio stations were purchased by one company that to me forms a monopoly on the radio air waves locally.
Along with that, jobs were lost and soon I'm sure, major changes in broadcasting programs will happen. There have been boycotts (my favourite word) and tons of articles written on the recent news. I won't go into the details of who is involved or company names as it's been mentioned tons of times. I do feel for the DJ's that got sacked in this deal as we as musicians are connected with them in many ways. As usual, I have a different slant on things and this recent news is no different. Excluding the DJ's themselves, I just found most of the stations lame on content and some I hope change formats drastically. The original 99.5 back a few decades ago was the best rock station around and it pretty much ended rock radio in Sault Ontario Canada. Anyone remember CKCY or CJIC radio in Sault Ontario? Maybe with
a change in programing with this buyout, a new great station will come to light. At this point 101.3 is the worst station of all and I can honestly say, I can't listen to it anymore. Personally, our own town should be boycotted for not getting our own rock stations. Of course I know nothing of the laws of how radio works but it just seems retarded that we use to have 2 rock stations here and now we don't. What can we do to have one now when it appears a monopoly has been launched on airwaves in for our U.S. neighbours. I am puzzled like many on how one company can own so many stations in one area. I can only see this hurting advertisers as there is really no more deals on advertising prices. How can you get a deal when there is no competition to go to? ;-)
We shall wait and see what develops with this. Follow your local news media as this unfolds.
