Well I've been playing both the new Porcupine Tree and the new Rush album all week and easily Porcupine Tree's newest offering is by far my favourite. The drumming by Gavin Harrison on Porcupine Tree's "Fear of a Blank Planet" is stunning and he is by far one talented drummer. He has played with P.T. on 3 albums now and each one has a host of tasty drum parts. Song wise the new album is deep, deep, deep with dynamics that most bands couldn't do in a million years. The songs are all so different from each other that you wonder how the heck one band can be so diverse. Steve Wilson is a musical genius in my opinion. He writes the material, is the lead singer/ guitar player, does the mix and mastering on the CD and if that wasn't enough, he plays in other bands doing the same thing. He's a writing machine. Gavin Harrison does his own drum mixing at his home studio and the total sound of "Fear of a Blank Planet" is fresh and hugely powerful. On the down side of things, if you are NOT into Progressive Rock and long songs or if you like cheeso songs with lyrics "oh baby baby baby,,, shake y'er junk" then you'll hate Porcupine Tree, BUT if you want to hear intelligent music with intelligent lyrics, test out Porcupine Tree and see what else the music world has to offer that is not jammed down your throat from MTV or mainstream radio ;-)
