Yes, it's been a while since I've had time to post but here we are. :-) Let's get right to the nitty gritty.
1. The rumours of Wishbone being done are partially true. Tony Kajnar and I have moved on to other projects and Steve Flint is now playing steady with The Suicide Kings. A few reasons contributed to the departure
and none of them were personal. We all got along fine. Most of the problems were creative differences on the music, but most of all, the lack of gigs. It's hard to book an all original band. My only other problem was the volume of the band. I've suffered hearing loss over my 30 years of playing and I'd like to keep what I have left. ;-) I just could not get the volumes down and it was affecting my hearing and my playing. The 3rd album is actually completely written and we did start to record but our singer Dennis Duguay moving out of the city limits, made practices and communication difficult. Tony and I decided we wanted to move on and so did Steve. Dennis will continue with Wishbone I'm sure because it is his baby but I think he should continue on as a solo artist with hired musicians to help feed his direction in music. He's a talented song writer. So, Wishbone is officially on hold for now and in the hands of Dennis. I'm not ruling out a regrouping at some point in the future, but right now, we've moved on.
2. Flat Stanley rumours have been running amuck lately for whatever reason. This will clear things up. No, there is no truth to a reunion of the original lineup (Glen Thomas, Steve Cardiff, Jim O'leary) getting back together. I'm not sure who started that rumour, but that will "never" happen. I won't rule out playing with Steve again but there is no chance of a reunion with Jim. That bridge has been crossed twice and will not happen again. There is also a rumour that Flat Stanley has found a singer. This is partially true but only for recording purposes, not live shows. We have had numerous singers adding their talent to our songs and we have recently added one more to the list of efforts. The band continues to write and record and are currently focusing on live shows this summer if everything falls into shape. Also, the rumour of Flat Stanley being "done" are absolutely false. This project is still in full swing and we just posted a rough demo of a new tune called "Caution Tape" (without vocals so far) on our Reverbnation site. www.reverbnation.com/flatstanleymusic/song/15833287-flat-stanley-caution-tape-demo So whomever thinks we haven't been writing, recording or moving forward can suck my pee pee. ;-)
3. Rumours of the old paper mill holding concerts is true as one show was just held a few days ago. From what I understand, this may be a regular thing. I heard the sound was horrible and I don't mean that from a sound company point of view as Crank Sound Distribution was the company doing it. They are great! What I mean is it's a cement bunker and sound rebounds like crazy and frequencies run amuck in the high end as there is nothing to absorb or warm the sound. A few people I've talked to after this show are still hurting from the echo. If this regular concert series continues, that would be awesome. I just hope they bring a variety of acts in.
4. True! A local video company operated by Rick Dellavedova (RikDVD) is looking to help local bands get their music and live performances filmed. I talked to Rick not long ago and he has lots of ideas on promotion for anyone looking for help. He has done work with Garden of Bedlam including video work for them during their opener for Kiss a few years ago. Rick also does home video for the sale of real-estate properties
under the moniker "Househustlers.ca". Email him at
rikdvd@hotmail.com
5. True. Yet another recording studio has popped up in the Sault area. This one is called "Smoke & Oak Room". It was started by Dave Pihlaja, a Music Industry Arts grad from Algonquin College. Apparently the local band "The Suicide Kings" are laying tracks down there now for a demo.
You can contact Dave at smoke.oak.studio@gmail.com
Here's a video interview of Dave.
6. More musician thefts have been reported. I won't mention names but this has got to stop. It's bad enough the gear we musicians use costs a fortune but to have some worm steal it from you is pathetic. I've experienced theft of gear in the past and it's a hollow angry feeling. If you know of someone who has gear that you know isn't theirs, do the right thing and rat the F'in' prick out. We don't need dickhead crooks in the world, we need honest musicians creating music with gear they fell in love with and bought themselves.
7. Word is out that the Nicolet has started matinees..This is sadly true. BARF! I hate matinees.. playing from 3 in the afternoon until 7pm and then having to do a late show after that is annoying to any musician. If the money was reasonable it might buy some musicians interests but to most, it's an annoying venture. Reggies has had matinees for years and you can ask most musicians who have done them and they will all say the same thing..."HATE THEM".
8. Rik Datson is once again working on a music history exibit at our local Museum on Queen St. I hope I'm not posting this too late as the one he did a few years ago was very successful. Check it out if you get a chance, you won't be disappointed. If I missed it by posting late, then you might be disappointed haha. OOPs!
9. Garden of Bedlam have been rather quiet since the release of their debut album. I do believe they are falling into the same curse as Wishbone where as they want to showcase original music but the venues wanting to hear original material are few and far between. Touring is the only option but as I know with my own situtation, it's hard to leave a good job, family and security for the unknown. Garden of Bedlam should be doing opening shows for main acts but in this day and age, you have to "pay to play" . Read any bio on bands starting out on tours as openers and you know the money isn't there and you pretty much have to scratch and claw for any gains a long time before it becomes profitable. Bottom line is "Can you afford to be an opener and actually make a living"? Most can't. I know this from experience believe me. ;-) Anyways, hopefully a venue comes along soon that enjoys original material with an edge. Lop Lops has it covered for the art rock folks, but we need an all rock and metal venue in a big way here.
10. More "Glen the Freq" rumours are flying around that I will address here. No, I'm not dead, although some wish I was, so that rumour is slightly exaggerated. :-). There has been a few rumours of me retiring from music because I've not played live in a long time. Well, this is totally false as I just played bass live with the Dorian Greys band a few weeks ago. Truth is, I am totally involved with recording which is my first love over live playing. I will never retire. ;-)
There is a rumour of me expanding my recording studio "Screaming Mosquito Studios". Yes, this is in the plan work right now. I have been researching soundproofing materials for an expansion plus structual expansion to an existing building on my property. I am looking to have 3 separate instrument and vocal rooms (drums, guitars, vocals) and a control room. I've had so much interest and requests to record other projects that I may consider recording outside work. At this point in time however, that is not an option nor my focus as my studio is strictly for my own projects. If I change my mind, I will let you know. ;-) The other rumours that keep flying around are that I'm a miserable old F#@k and that I'm hard to work with. This is true but only if you don't pull your own weight. I hate slackers and people with excuses on why they continuously avoid getting the job done. I eat, sleep and breathe music and the arts, and if you aren't on that same page, you're going to see my miserable side. Those who whine and cry about me are those that didn't take that part of me seriously nor did they their own music seriously. I want to create and play music, not listen to excuses. I also have no tolerance for thoses with drug or alcohol issues as anyone close to me knows. You know this chemical garbage causes problems and you've been taught this since you were a kid so I have no sympathy for those who have dependency on them and even less if the problem affects your musicianship if you're in a project with me. It's quite simple really. I also hate if a musician comes to a practice and doesn't know their stuff and I have to sit and press play, rewind and fastfoward on a tape or CD player while you learn the song on my time or band time. 30 years of certain musicians doing this has annoyed the hell out of me. If you're a musician that does this to your band, you're a moron. Learn the shit on YOUR time like you're suppose to and stop wasting everyones damn time. I should write a list of local musicians who have done that with me. ;-) Lazy, lazy lazy!! Now, if you hear rumours of me being a perfectionist, too picky, work-a-holic, prickish, angry, opinionated, stubborn, self centred, blunt or evil, well.... that's all true. haha ;-)
That's all folks. Freq out!
