Ah yes. Yet another installment of the "Rumour Mill". Why do I keep posting these? That's a no brainer... people like them and keep asking for them or giving me ideas to post so with that said, here are July's rumours thus far.
1. Of course the Freq rumours still continue. Not enough space to list them all but the ones of the Freq being dead and that he's been replaced by a clone from southern Ontario are NOT true ;-). Who the hell would want a career in cloning yours truly? Sheesh. The pay would be horrible :-)
2. Well, rumours about the Canadian Bar (Knights Poop Deck or whatever they tried to rename it) being for sale, might be true. I just
looked in Sault This Week that contains a Real estate flyer and there is an ad for a building for sale that looks a lot like the Canadian. I don't believe it's labelled as such but it does appear to be the building. I can't remember if a price was mentioned but let's just say it's prime property. Just think, if you buy it, you get the holes in the parking lot too. :-) One thing about that bar is its' history of music. It would be cool if they kept posters from all the bands that have played there. So, if you want to be a bar owner, this one might just be for sale and for you. ;-)
3. Sault Metal Scene expands it's research radar. Yup, it's true, Rob Figures has decided that he never wants to see sunlight again and thus spend even more time in his SMS batcave writing about local area music by expanding his circle of power. This goes on both the Canadian and U.S. side of the border. Being that I have written about the local scene for well over 10 years myself, there is no way I could handle that kind of workload with all the other things I have been involved with. Rob is a little nuttier than I. haha. Rob however has found his nitch in local media and this is obviously his passion and drive at the moment. To be honest, had global media not fallen apart like the music world, Rob would probably be a writer for Rolling Stone or some other big mag, but unfortunately, blogs have taken over, magazine corps are drying up. The ironic flip to this is making a living blogging isn't financially great but it does help you develop your craft. Rob has done that over the years and I think Rob should be knocking on a few doors of say Rolling Stone Magazine or one of the few other mags left on the planet to see about a career in music journalism. I know, if writing was my first love, I'd attempt it but for me, music is. As for what I think about the Sault Music Scene expanding its' research arena, it's all good, however, lack of venues to play really make it hard for many of the bands Rob talks about to get playing in public. We already know there is no money to be made playing in the local music scene. In fact, the money well dried up long ago for bands so you have to do it for the love of music, just like Rob does with his blog. I guess you can say the same for me. If we didn't love music, we wouldn't play it or write about it. ;-) So, I think we should have a benefit concert for Rob to help finance a sky light in his writing room since he will be trapped indoors without sunlight writing more about local metal. ;-)
4. New band??? Hmmm not sure. They are called "Fusion". When I first saw the name I thought... Cool... these guys must be playing some heavy jazz rock fusion tunes because that's where the term "Fusion" comes from but then after reading the lineup and the bio, I knew it wasn't. DAMN IT! Cool name though. So guess who is Fusion's drummer? Do I dare mention Sir Johnny Fabz name from Gsis Murphy fame? That was my first clue that the band Fusion was not playing fusion music. :-)Fabz can't play fusion..can he? ;-) The other members pack a good solid wall of talent so it will be interesting to see if Mr. Fabz can hold pace. What's the old saying I can use with Fabz?... "Put your money where your mouth is". ;-) I may just have to venture down to see Mr. Fabz knock 'em dead, bust a nut, choke a horse, mock a groove, lip sync a drum part, be fabz, (I'll think of more folks, just give me some time ;-). Should I stand at the stage edge mocking him like he did me a few years ago? Hmmm.. . Nah. I'm not that big a dickhead, besides he might pee himself. That stunt he and his band pulled was the cream of the crop for dickheads. Will I ever let Fabz forget that? haha probably not. I enjoy it too much. I probably could video tape their performance and do an evaluation of it on here? yeah..! That would be pretty cool. wink wink. ;-) Did I mention The Freq never forgets. ;-)

6. New band and album Paul D and Double Down. All stellar musicians in the band including Paul Dellavadova(guitar/ vocals), Dan Beaupre(bass), and Jack Fuller(drums). I have yet to buy the CD but as always, I will even if most people don't buy mine. ;-) sniffle!! Gotta love the way local musicians support other musicians eh? So with Jack Fuller in the mix of this band, I'm sure this band kicks the hell out of their previous band Southern Fried. Did I mention Johnny Fabz yet? oh yes. I did.. Sorry. Continue reading.
7. Not sure if I mentioned this before but did you hear that you might have to pay yet another fee to use published music for the likes of weddings, public events, etc, even if you bought the CD? Bands may even have to pay to use other people's published music. Last time I checked, bands playing cover material helped "advertise" the music of these other artists. Is it just me or has the music industry lost their damn minds??? How the hell do they expect to enforce this? Imagine, Music Police everywhere.. EEK!!! How pathetic. They've turned the music industry into a complete money grabbing joke.
8. Did I auditon for Canadian super group SAGA? YES!!! Did I get the job? NO!!! Am I bummed? NO!!! I wasn't ready to move to Germany which is where they are based these days but it was a fun thing to audition via the internet. I love SAGA and it would have been a dream come true but way too many solid drummers auditioned that were way beyond my whimpy talents. I actually auditioned for Smash Mouth years ago the same way. Failed on that one too. HA!!! I'm on a roll... drum roll that is.
9. Yes, my band Flat Stanley has entered its' song "Egg Beater" into the ESPN music hunt. They basically want music for their sports programs. Oh.. it's not free. Yes, I had to pay to enter and you get no money from doing this exept exposure. Bands don't make money these days, haven't you heard? You have to pay to play or pay to get heard. None the less, if picked, ESPN links everything up to your site to help people find your music to purchase. It's a a gamble so we took it. ;-)
10. Rumour of someone getting caught for the Case's Music guitar theft may be true. Again, it's a rumour and I have no details except what I mentioned. We'll see if local news confirms this in the near future.
11. Well, it is with great sadness that I say this but our local music stores seem to be losing touch with us old fart musicians. It's gotten to the point that everytime I walk into a music store locally, they never have what I want. I can no longer buy the guitar strings I used for years, or the drumheads, or even the drumsticks. Also, if I do go in, they say they can order what I want but it ends up costing me more than if I just go online and buy it myself. I hate to say it but why do I need a local music store if I have to order all the time? If I break a string, I want to be able to drive down and buy some and come back home and continue to play. So recently, I bought gear online and it actually came faster than if the store ordered it and a lot cheaper. Also, I have to do this with CD joints. Not all people listen to Beiber and Lady Ga Ga people. Some of us actually have taste and want to walk into a CD place and buy quality music which as you can see, very little appears locally. Tough times for me as I buy a lot of music and music gear. I would love to give my money locally like I've done for decades but the time has come to say, enough is enough. Also, Ebay has been my friend for used stuff along with the local pawn shops. There are deals to be had in those two places alone. I've found quite a few treasures over the years. ;-) Sorry local music stores... you've lost a customer.
Freq Out!!
