Hi kids. It's time once again for the rumour mill and the talk around town. I enjoy this topic, can ya tell? haha
1. First, there have been a lot of music gear thefts recently and a few rumours have been circulating around. The ones I've heard are that certain people are watching your Facebook photos and see the gear you have posted and from there, the thieves know what they're looking for. If this is in fact the case, there is a rat amongst our friends. The second rumour is that the gear stolen is being moved out of town. In either situation, I think it's a long shot but it does make you think. Whatever the case, it's time to be careful and make sure your gear is locked up tight or insured. The unfortunate truth is that if thieves want something bad enough, they'll get it but let's just hope this theft ring goes away soon.
2. Sad but true, the band Sneaky Pete has broken up. After a long start out of the gates and into a loyal public following, the band has called it a day. I'm sure there will be another project born from the ashes of this band. I will post news of it when I hear about it. ;-)
3. The band Obsession has a new singer. Yes, Lorrie Bulduc is out and Valery Powley is in. I have no details on the parting of ways with Lorrie but I'm sure it has something to do with her soon to be released solo album. I've heard bits and pieces of it and it is quite good although some tweaks are needed. The style is country rock. Her voice reminds me of Tanya Tucker and maybe a bit of Lorrie Morgan. Her replacement is Valerie Powley who is a veteran singer from the old band Spring Hill Jack ( don't quote me on the spelling) who actually released a video decades ago. I do believe it is the first video release of any Sault band and was showcased on a local video show called "Video Warehouse". Yes, you have to be old to remember that show and I am old. ;-) Valerie is the ghost of Janis Joplin and I mean that in a good way. She sings amazing versions of Janis's songs. You can see Valerie sing on Blues nights at the Water Tower inn or with Obsession around town.
3. New guitarist in the band Obsession? Sorry folks, that's just a rumour. haha. They do need a lead guitarist though. Nothing rounds
out a good batch of musicians like a solid, play all styles guitarist, something this band lacks. I'm not sure why they haven't pursued a new guitarist but if and when they do, you know you'll hear it here on the Planet. ;-)
4. John Fogerty IS coming here. I have no details because it's just fresh off the presses. Also, Bryan Adams is coming too. Do I know when? Of course not. I'm like you and hear this stuff in the rumour mill but both are true. ;-)
5. Rumours of singers not coming through for the Flat Stanley album are true, but nothing we didn't expect. With all the music done for my bands CD, the last but most important thing, the lead vocals, were going to be left up to volunteer local singers to fill the album. Brendan from Summer Thunder and Valerie from Obsession have recorded some great tracks for the album but quite a few others have either vanished without a trace or have backed out of the sessions. Of course, to me, singing and recording one song each isn't a problem and could easily be done in a few hours if they knew the material but for some local Sault singers, this has always been a problem. I've asked musicians for decades to come sing or play on recordings I've created and in most cases, the results are the same. The musicians commit, but before their scheduled to come, they vanish. It doesn't bother me in the least but it does puzzle me why some people just can't keep their word. There's a simple 2 letter word in the English language that people can use to basically state that they don't want to be a part of something and that is the word "NO". If someone asks you to be part of something and you're not interested, just say "NO". Ok, let's all say this together folks...."NO". |O|. Also, if you actually volunteer to sing without me asking you and constantly ask but when it comes down to the wire and you vanish, you're just a dickhead. ;-) So, if we don't get more singers recorded, my guitarist and I will be doing it ourselves. We'd prefer to have others singers as we are not very good lead singers, but if we have to, we will. To us, it's about getting the songs finished but we'd prefer better singers than us to finish the job. ;-) As for those singers who committed to the project but have not even shown up or avoided contact, we still love you but only like an ex girlfriend now. haha
6. There is a rumour going around again comparing this site to the Sault Metal Scene site. This rumour keeps coming around every few years and it's both funny and annoying so let's get this straight. The Freq's Music Planet and the SMS are NOT the same. Anyone who reads both can easily tell. Freq's Music Planet did NOT rip off SMS because the truth is this site was started years before SMS but also, this site had a former life as the Musician's Central site on Soonet for 3 years prior to becoming Freq's Music Planet. The reverse is also true, SMS did not rip off FMP. We may write about similar topics from time to time but that's it. That's the scoop folks. ;-) The Sault Metal Scene covers metal music 99 percent of the time where as this site is just snipets of everything. This is why you see a SMS link at the bottom of Freq's Music Planet. Both sites try to give you the best or the worst of Sault music related topics.. Also, the rumour of Rob Figures of SMS and I being animal lovers is true. ;-)
7. Yes, the rumour of me looking into starting a "used" music gear store are true and yes, I am still working on starting a local site for musicians to sell their music. I would like to have both out of one shop. All of this costs money and a lot of planning. I want these ideas to "work" for the long run so I'm not jumping into anything without a lot of research, planning and patience. I've owned a business in the past and have learned from my mistakes. ;-)
8. Yes, Case's Music is moving to Queen street. I believe it will be across the street, give or take, from the Windsor Park. The move is to
save costs for the owners but also have more space. I'm not sure when the move will take place.
9. There have been a lot of people including local music stores using Ebay as a price reference for music gear. I've been an Ebayer since the very beginning and I can tell you that prices of gear in recent years have hit the laughable stage. Folks, tons of people come up to me about this topic and my answer is this. Ebay is NOT the place to find out what your item is worth. Some people say hey, a Tama Swingstar drumset like mine is going for 8000 bucks on Ebay so that's what mine is worth. The problem is, that price is what the seller wants and not necessarily it's true value and in most cases, that person doesn't end up selling it anyways. You have to research your gear when buying or selling but you have to do it outside of Ebay. When Ebay started, you could get lots of great deals on music gear but that is not true today. Ebay is so popular now that retail stores have set up shop on there selling new gear which makes it almost impossible to get accurate evaluations of your gear. Local music shops and pawn shops are also using Ebay as a guide to set their prices which in most cases, prices items they want to sell in their local stores way out of site and logic for the common man. What I'm simply saying is that people are pricing their shit way over what it's worth so knock it off. If you're dumb enough to buy it at these greatly inflated prices then by all means, knock yourself out but for me, I will still research a good deal and if I'm selling, I will sell at a fair price. Price gouging always comes back to haunt you in the end. ;-) So don't be a moron. Research your gear or things you want to buy.
10. Rumours are flying around about metal bands wanting to be a part of Rotaryfest. I've heard this and the complaints and they are not rumours but in my opinion, they're going in the wrong direction. The metal bands want to be a part of either the Main Stage at Rotary or the 2nd Stage where as my thoughts are to create a 3rd Stage for metal acts. The problem I've had with Rotaryfest in general is the main stage and it's cover band theme. There is nothing wrong with cover bands but to have them showcased over original material is so damn ass backwards that it's almost laughable. But hey, what do I know? The organiser years ago gave me blue balls with his pig headed direction and I just wiped my hands of ever appearing on the Main Stage. I believe his name was Art FullofSpaghetti. ;-) Anyways, if metal bands want to be heard my simple word is this.. START YOUR OWN STAGE!!!! Think about it. Why would you want to be on the main stage of Rotaryfest with country bands, cover rock bands or kids shows? As for the 2nd Stage, why would you want to be onstage with folk bands, soft rock bands, or acoustic acts?? Come on, think logically. I'm not saying this to insult you, but common sense is going to tell you that there is no market in Sault Ste. Marie that will put a metal band on with a folk duo without having critics rip you to shreds. My solution is simple. Create "Stage 3" featuring metal bands. Pick an area near both the Main Stage and also 2nd Stage to hold the event but keeping is close enough to these other stages to gain some of it's audience but without interfering with the sound of these other events. The old brewery lot for example?? We have enough local sound companies to do all 3 stages, so why haven't the metalheads pursued this? I don't have a clue but in my opinion, you're wasting your time with the other stages because the metal music you play is not popular with the local masses and they don't want to risk losing their main group of spectators. Anyone listening??? So, start a 3rd Stage and here's the key... listen carefully,,, search out "sponsors" for your metal 3rd Stage event. Seek out 101 Radio for example as a sponsor. Search out the Rad Zone as a sponsor. Do some research. Get some big wigs involved to cough up a little money. Check with the OLG and see if this is something they might want to be a part of. Knock on some doors for shit sakes. I live by the old saying " if you want something done you have to do it yourself" so come on metalheads, get organized, do your homework, and start knocking on doors to create your own Rotaryfest metal Stage. This isn't rocket science but you need sponsors to cough up some money. ;-) You have to have a spokesman for the event, someone that can speak for all metal bands. This person has to be organised with a game plan for all the bands. You have to talk to the sound companies and see what they can do for you and the cost. Sponsors help with costs, but you need one person with a head on their shoulders to get you those sponsors. Without the proper spokesperson, you might as well beat your head against the wall. Come on metalheads, do your homework and maybe you will have a yearly event you can be proud of.
