By popular request I have been asked to review the song "21st Century Loser" by the gods of local shlock rock Gsis Murphy. It seems many, and I repeat MANY have wanted my opinion of this song since it is about little ole me. Of course, I had to give it some thought because I truly didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings with my opinion but after about exactly one point three seconds of deep thought I said, HELL YEAH! |O|
Ready? ;-)
First, the title. "21st Century Loser".
I find it highly insulting that they used the term "21st Century" in the title because now every time I listen to the great King Crimson song "21st Century Schizoid Man" I have Gsis Murphy illness and want to throw up.
Song structure. Being that I've never found Gsis Murphy entertaining or better yet, creative, it's only logical they not come up with an original sounding song. Music wise, I've heard this song tons of times as the cheesy soundtrack to many 1980's teenager movies. It also reminds me of "Eye of the Tiger" .. Remember that cheesy song? YUCK. Key word is "outdated".
Guitar wise, "Keith Chin" rips out his best bar chords for this puppy. Wait a minute, that's all he knows how to play is bar chords. YAWN! This is what happens when a guitar player doesn't learn some good ole "blues" music. Again, guitar chord structure is boring and predictable. Major chords.. Nothing remotely entertaining or even creative, AND more cheesy down picking.
Kripes that's lame. His guitar sound is what, programmed Line 6 module sound number 24?.. I have a Pignose battery powered amp that sounds better. ;-) Drum sound is of course buried in effects to make it NOT sound like the drums that were recorded. That unfortunately is a problem with a lot of recordings. As for Tony Fabz and his playing on this song... hmmmm. First, lose the Fabz handle, it's pretty cheezie.. but then again it does fit the band he's in. Drumming on this song is "stiff" and again uninspired. Basic rock beats have been milked to death. If the song has nothing to offer (like this one) then please try and spice it up on the drums in some way to create some spark. Playing a simple metronome beat keeps it together but you have to inspire the band. That doesn't happen on this song. Tony once told me he likes groove players and keeping it simple. Where's the groove on this song? There is such a thing as keeping it tooooo simple. It sounds like Tony was afraid of the click track. ;-)
The bass... well, Tim is a good bass player and in my opinion, a waste of musician in this band. I look beyond the surface when I listen to musicians play live or on recordings. Beyond Tim's c**ky sarcastic personality, he can play. HOWEVER, on this song, he falls into simplicity and basically follows Keiths guitar chords. Top that off, "Tony Chin" on guitar is playing the same as Keith (if he's playing at all ;-)). The other laugh is, all the guitars have the same sound. DUH! Why have 3 instruments playing the exact same cheezie chords or sounding the same??? Why have the drums mimic the exact same changes at the other 3 instruments. BORING! This is how limited their musical vocabulary is. Get this, I'm a shitty guitarist at best but even my own crap has variety in types of chords. Word of advice haha..(yeah like they'll take it) BUY A CHORD BOOK and learn some new chords. Talk about not thinking outside the box. I think it's time Murphy started "listening" to music around them rather then stroking their own egos. Tony on vocals.. I'm sorry but his voice is annoying but so is mine so what can I say. |O| The difference... I know it, and he doesn't. ;-) Is it just me or does he always sound like he's got marbles in his mouth? I was going to say balls, but that would sound improper... |O| Tony sounds the same on every song. Why? Because he's limited and likes it that way obviously no matter who's eardrums he shatters. Vocal styles have changed in music but for some reason he wants to continue doing his best Bon Jovi "thang". Sorry, it ain't workin'.
The over all mix of the song is boring. BORING!. With the tons of "tasty" effects and tricks available for free online, not to mention videos of how to create interesting music, the Kings' of Cheeze fall back on 80's mixes and the result is a song that is dated. Think I'm wrong? haha.. Go rent the movie "Pretty in Pink" or similar movies. Freq knows.. ;-)
Now the fun part. The lyrics. For those who don't know, this song is about me. This is about a battle of wits that the band Gsis Murphy and I have had for years to which they are always on the losing end. This song is about a band that cannot accept the fact that I, Glen the Freq have been able to see through their bullshit since day one and in my own voice, and forum, speak my findings. Most people don't understand what this is all about and to me, that's fine because in fact, it's really between them and me. ;-) You can take sides or you can stay neutral on what you think of this battle of wits but the bottom line is...........Freq RULES |O|
To break it down to a simple theme, they are snot bag egomaniacs
that can't play and I mock that and help others learn of their backstabbing bullshit. ;-) VOILA!
Tony Chin, the main mooing cow in this song wrote the lyrics based on my comments and a few others posted on my forum. Tony is a loyal reader. Let's say he's addicted to my rants ;-). In his lyrics he mumbles that I pushed his buttons... My response is.....HAHA!
His lyrics are conflicting in that he says no one reads what I write but we all know that the local music scene does read what I write, he most of all. His band even promotes others to visit my site and read my stuff so his lyrics are kinda DUMB. Another lyric says I kiss my own ass, but then he laughs his own ass off. To use the word "ass" 2 times in one sentence is pretty bad song writing. Personally I'd rather kiss my own ass than someone elses ;-) Do I detect jealousy?? haha. My bad, I know, I don't promote Gsis Murphy poor babies. I guess using single syllable words like "ass" cut down on the mumbling when Tony sings. |O| Speaking of mumbling, I couldn't understand a lot of the song and no, I'm not kidding. I think there are words like "and" "you" "but" "b*tch" and some other one syllable words in there. haha.
I only heard the song once but this song is a revenge song by a band that just simply can't create unique music. This song is simply a "slam" song and a personal statement by a band that just doesn't know what music is about. Yes, I'm sure they were laughing their asses off recording it knowing it was being done to teach me a lesson. Silly silly boys. Did I learn a lesson? You bet. I learned that my comments on a simple forum turn some into goofy dorks. |O| The song and the bands lack of wit yet prickish ways have drawn people to me which I'm sure wasn't their objective. |O| More listen to my music and read my rants and Gsis Murphy's stupidity has helped that in a small way. ;-) I repeat SMALL way. Most of all, it gives me more to be witty about hehe.
I am sooooo looking forward to the Gsis Murphy album coming out.
You can bet there will be a review of it here ;-) I may have to have my stomach pumped after I listen to it but for the public and Freq fans, I'LL DO IT!
The boys have been quiet since their embarrassment playing this song at the KISS Battle of the Bands. Poor babies. Must be tough living with such embarrassment, big chins and no talent. I need a tissue. *sniffle*. |O|
FREQ RULES!!!!!!!!!!
