Well, I survived watching this yet again this year but to be honest, this awards show didn't annoy the crap out of me like it did in past years. There were some fine performances. Here are my opinions of the show.
First, I'm sick of "theatrics" during a performance. Lady Blah Blah, Pink and Beyonce, just sing... ok? Enough of the stupid clown acts. Just SING! It's getting to the point they look like circus acts now with all the dumb outfits and stage props... JUST SING! In my opinion all the eye candy is not hiding the fact the songs you're singing SUCK.
Don't get me wrong, these 3 can sing and they look great but unfortunately, the songs they are singing are dull, boring pieces of crap. If they spent more time on song writing than on the gimmicks then maybe I'd enjoy their performance more. Beyonce and her army of soldiers was absolutely STUPID. What was the point??
Rap is Crap. Sorry, I am sick of mainstream rap. It's as bad as main stream rock and country. It's the same shit in a different pile over and over and over. Underground music is where you will find the most unique rap, rock, country music. etc. etc. etc. What exactly was the M&M performance last night with half of the sound bleeped out. What a waste of TV airtime. As soon as something raw becomes mainstream it's crap. I mean really, television viewers had to witness this bleeped out performance as a closing highlight to the Grammys? What moron came up with that? Yeah, that'll get ratings. DUH! I'm sure there was someone more entertaining they could have had perform out of all those musicians in the audience. To top it off we have Blink 182's drummer playing and introduced like he's some kind of legend. The guy sucks.. Sorry but he does. Over rated. If you like his drumming then you haven't research "drumming" very much. Tell ya what. If you have the internet, go learn about drummers and put the Blinky Travis thing behind you. And does he ever wear a shirt? You're playing one song in front of millions of viewers. Wear a shirt for shit sakes.
Weakest live performance was Taylor Swift but that said, her album deserved the wins. She's cute as a button but she sang off key a bit more than most would have liked ;-) Compared to the other power house singers on stage, she was definitely the weakest vocalist BUT she writes good material and that's why she won.
Lesson to be learned....best musicians don't always write the best songs. ;-)
Highlights were the performance by Mary J. Blige and opera star Andrea Bocelli. Stunning. Bocelli could sing a song about Corn Flakes and make you whimper in awe from his performance. The guy is amazing. Can he hold a note or what? If you disagree you need to pound your head on a nice hardwood floor.
Zac Brown had great harmony vocals and even though I hate the 2/4 drumbeat, they're a solid band. 2/4 beat = country = punk music. Hard to believe punk and country have a common denominator eh? haha.
The Michael Jackson tribute was also great. The performers didn't showboat and it made it that much more enjoyable. I loved the song and I'm not a Jackson fan either.
The highlight for me was the performance by Jeff Beck and band.
If you don't know who Jeff Beck is, you need a brain transplant.
His band did a tribute to guitar legend Les Paul and I must say, the song they played was a breath of fresh air over the 3 hours of consistently rehashed slop music played before they performed.
It's amazing how a classic old song like that sounds like a breath
of fresh air amongst the crap played before it. haha
Dave Mathews was great although I thought Dave was having a seizure half way through the song. |O| There's a reason they're voted the number one live act to see and you saw the reason last night on the Grammys.
Green Day's performance was lame. Why they're still around is a mystery to me. I grew up in the days of "The Who" so you can understand when I say bands like Green Day bore me. Polished Punk music.. Um is there a need for that? I don't get the point of Green Day.
Bon Jovi -- Well................They looked bored playing their own songs so you know how I feel |O| I will say that the duet country rock song in the middle of their set was damn solid vocally.. That gal can sing and Bon Jovi can't. I'm sure local Sault band Gsis Murphy wet themselves in bliss seeing Bon Jovi perform |O|
So, bottom line, the Grammy show was better than most. "Rock" music was pretty much non existent. I do know rock albums were recorded and sold in 2009 but for some reason, not much of it was showcased on this awards broadcast. Instead, we had to look at 7 minute performances of people in goofy outfits with egotistical attitudes look like clowns or Beyonce roll on the floor or Pink fly in the air singing shitty songs or cover songs by some other artist. Ok,, Beyonce rolling on the floor on any other given day would be damn sexy but it looked stupid last night. |O| I was waiting for the trained dogs and elephants to come out and perform. The stage lay out was great and i loved the wide video projection screens behind the stage. The 3D glasses thing was absolutely stupid !!! Talk about hype with no satisfaction. Blah! I did laugh my ass off seeing "cool" people in the audience wearing 49 cent 3D glasses while we at home barfed in our bowls of popcorn. hehe.
In closing... research music history. Discover where music has come from and the paths it has taken. Don't just live in the "now" of music because there is a lot of fabulous music out there laying dormant that needs to breathe new light on a very stale music industry that has forgotten it's roots. Blend old with new and see if it gives birth to something "original". The formulated cookie cutter music of present day has absolutely killed creativity. It's time to break out of that. :-)
