It's been a few weeks since I've had time to sit down and post a "long" installment on my forum but today is the day for it. :-)
First, a quick recap of 2009. |O| Do I need to repeat any of that? It's probably easier to breeze through some past posts to get a taste of the good and bad 2009 brought but I will throw a few highlights out for those who want it.
First, for me, it was a great year for recording. I got to play on 3 albums in 2009 with local bands Huckster and Wishbone. The 2nd Wishbone release should be out this year sometime but it was recorded in 2009 ;-). Also, I ended my runs with these 2 bands to mainly focus on my own recording studio, solo work and my main band Flat Stanley. Of course there are always rumours why someone leaves a band and in this city, the stories are always blown out of proportion, but in the case of both these bands the fact remains that they were always side projects to my main band Flat Stanley and eventually me leaving would happen. Speaking of Flat Stanley, the lead singer/ guitarist Jim and I celebrate 10 years this year in this musical venture. As for my reasons for leaving Huckster, it's simple. Lack of communication. One person in the band forgot to communicate the fact that it was his way not the bands way the day we were going into recording our album. |O| That's a no no and I said bye bye.
As for Wishbone, they were more concerned with my forum and what I say on this forum than actually focusing on the job at hand, the music. Apparently they figured what I said may affect the band. In short, they wanted a gag order on me. |O| That's a first for me. :-) Music wise and band wise Wishbone was a blast to play with. On the downside, their life style was a little over the top for me. Musician wise Huckster and Wishbone have the cream of the crop. All great players and writers. The problem was being team players, lack of communication and loss of priorities. I had great runs with both bands and we wrote music I'm very proud of and we actually got to record a product which is always a bonus. Unlike my main band Flat Stanley where we all respect each others personal opinions and endeavours, Huckster and especially Wishbone had their hang ups. It all ended after I left with everyone being happy. Each band has new drummers and are still going strong as am I.
Creativity wise, my band Flat Stanley spent most of the year writing a ton of songs and playing a few gigs. We played the Wawa Arena last March and had a blast. My guitarist Jim is from that neck of the woods and he brought out tons of people to the show making it a highlight for 2009. We also had some of the best food ever up in Hawk Junction. If only they delivered to the Soo. haha. Flat Stanley accomplished writing over 80 songs for an upcoming double CD release. Solo music wise, I wrote and recorded a few songs including the instrumental "Crab Apple Orchard" which climbed to the 1800's on the Reverbnation charts. You might think that's not very good but out of 45,000 songs from others around the world, that's awesome for me. ;-) The song continues to hang in the charts on Reverbnation. You can listen to it on my player on the main page of this forum.
Also in 2009 I bought a new computer and software for my recording studio. This studio is for my own music and Flat Stanley music only. Quite a few have asked me to record them but to be honest, I have no interest in going into business for recording. I have a ton of my own material that I want recorded and that was the soul purpose of upgrading my studio. Eventually, I'm going to convert my 24 x 24 garage into a complete studio for my own projects only. My basement right now is limited for space.
Other than that, life and health were great for 2009.
Hmmm.. let's see, the best laughs of 2009 were easily Gsis Murphy and their constant vigil to "out do" me, The Freq. |O| For me, my constant ragging of this hack band has always been about humour. They unfortunately let things get under their skin and now all they focus on is "beating the Freq". As we saw at the recent Battle of the Bands contest, that didn't happen. Like I mentioned on this forum before, there are other forums that hate this band. There is also a poll going around the city that voted Gsis Murphy the WORST band of 2009, something I already knew. No, I didn't start that poll, someone else did but I can't argue them as winners of that award. Like I mention on my forums warning on the main page, everything I post, stays on my forum. My forum also won for best over all read and for that, I thank you. :-) Win for best local event of the year was the Battle of the Bands Kiss contest. I think that was pretty much right. Best music store Grooves Music. Etc. There is an underground scene in our city that comes up with this stuff and I'm just happy to be on the winning side of it. Congrats to Gsis Murphy for winning worst band of 2009.. |O|
On the negative, 2 local musicians made it known they are whacked in the head. One is Frank and the other is Phil. 2009 was the year these guys were out to show how many musicians they could threaten before being considered cracked in the head. Both local drummers, both with problems dealing with logic and med dosages but also "letting go" of their anger. |O| Frank literally ticked of tons of musicians with hate songs he and a partner wrote and posted on their bands Myspace music site. After numerous complaints, the site was taken down and apparently Frank's partner left town. Unfortunately for us, Frank remains and he went after Jay from the band Big Wheel and the Spokes and myself at the recent Battle of the Bands. It's apparent this boy needs help or a jail cell. Phil is just hanging on to hate to the point it's retarded. His focus is me and a friend on our forum and in 2009 he attacked a woman in a bar thinking it was our forum member. To his surprise, it was the wrong person and to finish off 2009 he went after me just as I was going on stage with my band at the Battle of the Bands and get this, coming off the stage after our performance. You could tell, he was hunting me down waiting for his BIG moment to spring on me at the edge of the stage yapping his mouth off to ruin my performance. All I could do was laugh and I'm still laughing. Don't these people have hobbies or shrinks they could see? Like really.
My predictions of these 2 idiots for 2010 are simply that they will continue to do what they've been doing and that is to threaten until they hurt someone. I've been eye to eye with both of them and you can tell, they're a little bent in the head and that they want payback even though their own stupidity caused their own grief. You figure it out, I can't. All I know is I expect more problems from these 2.
The "Sham" of the year has to be the Canadian boycott of my band Wishbone as openers for the Grady show. One month later, both Wishbone and I with my own band are performing on the Canadian's stage. Wow, like make up your mind Canadian Bar.. Sheesh. All this boycotting triggered by Gsis Murphy and their wet diaper ways of crying until they get their way, doing nothing but give the Canadian bar, Gsis Murphy and the local music scene yet another bad scar. Way to go idiots. ;-) What next? Ban me from the city in 2010? |O| Good Luck with that.
My personal highlights of the local music scene for 2009 was the Battle of the Bands. Win or Lose, it showed people are into local talent and original material, something missing from the old days. Also add the opening of a few new local rock clubs for the outlet of this material. I couldn't be happier with that. ;-)
The best part of 2009 for me personally was watching Gsis Murphy make asses out themselves as they fed off my forum. It was beautiful. I look forward to more of the same for 2010 until they explode from frustration, ego melt down, or over eating, whatever comes first. |O|
Goals for me in 2010 are simply to get Flat Stanley's CD done and my own solo works done, convert my garage into my studio, play all original material live all I can and live, and love life like always. Oh, and yes, post on my Freq's Music Planet forum. ;-)
Have fun in 2010 everybody.
