I was just emailed this link from a friend. The musician is Rusty McCarthy who lives here in the Sault but ventures to Toronto to do recording. He recently released an album and you can hear the tracks at this link. The music is blues based but has a Dire Straits vibe to it. From this site you can venture to Rusty's official site and the sound quality of the recordings on his site are excellent. cdbaby.com/cd/rustymccarthy

Local goth band "Gate's of Winter" are about to release another CD effort and I was sent a link to a few songs that they've posted for people to have and listen to. Here's the link. www.gatesofwinter.com/main.php?page=mediaThe band have really worked at polishing the edges of their band and the production sounds very good on these two songs. Writing wise, I don't find the tunes really too original. If they could break out of that gothic sound I think I'd probably like the band more but hey, what do I know. They'll probably hit it big in Europe where this style of music seems to be huge. For me though, this style has been done to death and it's time to discover something new ;-) None the less, their tunes are worth a listen. ;-)

"Career Suicide" is not quite a local band but it does contain one of the Soo's aggressive bass players. Who would think that his claim to fame was in a country band. That bassist is none other than Matt Miller. I was in a few projects with Matt and let's just say, there was never a dull moment. He's gone from the Soo and joined Career Suicide a number of years ago and they just released more music. Matt did come back to the Soo a few years ago and showed up at one of my gigs with some Career Suicide items like an LP (vinyl) and a few other goodies. The band has toured on and off these past years making a trip overseas for a bit to Japan, Ireland but also State side to New York and more Recent news puts them out in the Montreal area for some shows. Their website has not really been updated with current shows but Matt is on my Facebook list and I've seen photos of a recent show. The band has gone through numerous line up changes but Matt has been with them for at least 3 or 4 years. The band is all about Punk, not a normal thing for Freq's Music Planet but because Matt and I are friends, I'm giving them a plug. The band is tight, aggressive and somewhat old school but still worth a listen. This is their latest, as of late 2008. and an MP3 for a taste. Career Suicide - Double LifeHere's a picture of Matt Miller in action. Here's their website www.careersuicide.net/Here's a video.. Almost all their live videos on Youtube have crap sound but here's a small taste of them live. Oh by the way, the Jackson bass in this video was ripped off and Matt would like it back. This bass began it's musical career in the hands of local bass giant, George Ravlich. Just a bit of nostalgia.
