I just got back from seeing the documentary film "Full Moon Lightning" and I totally loved it. I'm a big fan of early 70's films like Easy Rider and Vanishing Point and this movie, although not similar in topic, did have a similar visual feel and style. The film is about the journey to find lead singer Floyd Lee's family roots. The film apparently took 4 years to make. What made the film very moving for me was that there were really 2 stories being told. While Floyd Lee and the band are on journey to a hopeful happy ending, Joel, guitarist and song writer for the band, along with the love of his life "Nella" are a big part of this movie also. Sadly, the story of Joel and Nella ends in tragedy as she succumbs to cancer. The movie then shows Joel and the Floyd Lee band taking this dark part of all their lives and turning it into a musical tribute to Nella. For me, the film is a wonderful tribute to Nella along with the songs Joel wrote for the recent CD, but also a tribute to blues music in it's rawest form. Floyd is wonderful singer and quite the character and the last of a kind. When he sings, his voice and phrasings bring you back to a time in music when it was truly honest and pure. There are very few blues singers like Floyd Lee left in the music scene these days and I got the impression from Floyd in the film that he's surprised that people are as interested in him as much as they are. Floyd sings and plays music for the simple love of it. I can definitely relate The film was part of the "Shadows of the Mind" film festival and totally sold out with lots of local Sault musicians in the crowd. I hope everyone has a chance to see this indie film. You won't be disappointed.
