For me song writing has been a way of capturing things, people and events into a media like most would say for example, write in a diary.
I also find songwriting a great stress reliever ;-)
Unfortunately, I started off playing drums and the only way to convey my thoughts of a song was to approach musicians in my bands and hope they got the point. Well... that was a total waste of time. First, I found most musicians have no interest in hearing what I wanted to write and second, they never seem to see how something in it's raw form can turn into something better. I believe the term is "close minded". This still happens to this day with my present bands in fact I think it's worse. Over my 30 years of a music career, I did a few smart things. 1. I learned to play other musical instruments and 2. I learned a ton about computers and recording software. Now, I don't need anyone's lazy attitude or close minded ways to stop me from writing what I want to hear. Don't get me wrong. I'm not writing for the purpose of making it on the Billboard top 100, in fact that's never been my goal as a writer. In fact, most of the music I love are bands or artists that are never heard on radio. I love the underground music scene where bands can be themselves without being squashed by non-creative producers and record exects. Do I sound bitter? No I'm not really. I love the underground music scene and want to be a part of it and that's the simple truth. Unfortunately, underground music seems to be shunned upon by most but for me, I find it the most creative, most original sounding music ever. I'm kinda stuck though because I would love to play some of my material with my band but like so many times before... it falls on deaf ears. I get great satisfaction from recording all parts and singing and writing lyrics but even I would like some input sometimes but alas, that rarely if ever, happens.
Right now I'm using Sonar 6 to write and record my music. I have a ton of plugins including great synth programs by the Native Instruments company who make the best B4 organs sounds ever among other programs, all of which work within Sonar.
